“Intelligence without character is just a smart person who might do bad things,” said Liz Huntley, president of The Hope Institute. “If we want to develop and shape students who are going to be leaders and contributors to our society, we want them to be people of character, kindness, empathy, and resilience.”

The Hope Institute gives legs to this belief.

Founded in 2016 by Liz Huntley and Drayton Nabers Jr., former CEO of Protective Life Corporation and Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, the 501(c)(3) institution brings schools in Alabama the best practices for developing good character in students.

Under the leadership of longtime public educator and Director of Programs, Dr. Patricia Simpson, The Hope Institute is working toward accomplishing this goal through initiatives like the Hope Leadership Academy. The aim of this intensive, three-year program is to enable educators from participating schools to create strategies that help them develop a culture that promotes character development.

Currently, The Hope Institute helps over 80 Alabama schools by providing on-site consulting, lectures, professional development opportunities and research to support each school as it establishes a culture of character.

“They’re seeing successes in their schools,” said Huntley. “The environment they’ve created is motivating kids to learn, work hard, be goal-driven and have hope.”
