What Hope Means to Me

When I first came to Hope I was full of fear and frustration with my parent's decision. My previous drug use had shattered all relations and trust with my parents.

The worst part was seeing the tears in my mom's eyes when I would come home loaded and all the dreams she had for her son seemed to disappear and fade into memories.

I soon became a stranger in my own home, isolating myself from my parents and from my sister.

My addiction spread like wildfire burning all bridges and sanctuaries my family had built over the years. The pain inside became so unbearable I could not even look myself in the eyes, let alone my parents.

My parents tried putting me in numerous therapies, but they didn't know me so it was easy to lie to get my parents off my back in hopes they would leave me alone completely.

In my last session with my counselor my parents had announced a place I would be sent to, this place was The Hope Institute. I didn't even know what to think, I had never been to rehab. Only junkies went to rehab, and I was no junkie (so I thought). But the second I arrived I felt a feeling of warmth and welcomeness, a strange feeling of trust and relation with my peers.

All my life I floundered around society's groups, trying to find a place to fit in. There were actually only two groups I really seemed to fit in with, the Toadies and, now that I think about it, the clean and sober people in my life.

Hope was like a door to this new world I had never experienced before. I was finally able to talk freely about my fear and frustrations in a care-free setting.

Hope has a lot to offer, and cares about their patients. Now I know by staying clean and sober, I will be able to achieve the goals in life that seemed so distant. Hope is a great program and gives us what we need most, "Hope."

Contributing to the The Hope Institute Family Fund of Southern California, Inc.

The Family Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting education and treatment for families in need of counseling, and preserving the family through innovative programs and comprehensive services.

The Fund was created to underwrite counseling services for families who can't afford to pay for treatment. Youth (13-18) can receive help and recover from:

  • Abuse–physical, emotional, sexual
  • Trauma–rape, molestation
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Substance abuse
  • Depression
  • Grief, loss and abandonment
  • Neglect
  • Family discord
  • Adoption issues
  • Anger and violent outbursts

Left untreated, these teens can end up on the streets or in our judicial system. They can be helped, recover and become functioning and productive -- even happy adults!

If you haven't been personally affected, it's likely that you know people who are.

Here is what our families say about the program:

"We struggled for more than three years with my son's drug problem. We thought we were out of options, until we found The Hope Institute. Had it not been for Family Fund's scholarship program, our family would not have been able to access the help we severely needed. This program was the turning point for our entire family."

Heather (Parent)

"Our funds ran short a few months ago, and we thought that we might have to remove our son from The Hope Institute. Once again, HOPE came through for our family in the form of a partial scholarship. The Family Fund scholarship allowed our son to finish his stay at The Hope Institute with a sense of closure and the enthusiasm to begin a new life in recovery."

Eric (Parent)

"When I first came to Hope Institute, I was heavily addicted to methamphetamines. I was 14 years old and weighed 90 pounds. I was suicidal and felt hopeless. Today, I am so very grateful for The Hope Family Fund. If it wasn't for The Hope Institute, who helped me and my family get through the hard times and slowly bring me back to health and sanity, I would not be alive today. I am very grateful for all that you've done for me and I thank God that I was the chosen one to get the gift of another chance at my life. Thank you for saving my life and my family."
